Statistically, the DC/MD/VA area, in particular, suffers from higher rates of maternal distress than other areas across the country. In fact, the recent numbers from the CDC indicate that Washington DC has the worst maternal health outcomes in America.
What’s more, the burden of this tragedy is experienced disproportionally by minority women in DC and mostly by parents-to-be on Medicaid. In many instances, birthing people can’t afford the out-of-pocket expenses of hiring a doula.
As a collective, we realize that everyone could benefit from a doula. Doulas help improve maternal outcomes and aid to the comprehensive maternal health care of our community.
What’s good for our birthers is good for our community.
This is why we created this program.
We want to provide equal access to labor support for all birthing people and give back to the community by providing support wherever it is needed most.
We hope that this site will serve as a portal for birthing people in the DC/MD/VA area who are looking for doulas but are unable to afford a higher fee.
